Do you really know why you started your small business? I mean really? It’s not just to make money, or just to make a little extra money. I can guarantee you that.
For me, as someone who works with big business every day in my day job, I wanted to be able to take that expertise to the small guys. Mums, Dads, people who have amazing skills or ideas but might not have all the know-how to avoid the pitfalls of starting and managing a small business.
But that is not what helps me focus my efforts everyday, the real reason that I started Accession with Amanda, my business partner and super smart best friend, was to create some flexibility for me to spend more time with my family. I love my day job, helping people deliver results, particularly better community outcomes, by creating better work experiences, but I don’t love doing it because we are dependent on the money.
Since having my little munchkins, I have succumbed to the cliche of changed priorities. I want the financial flexibility to spend the time with them watching them grow, as well as do the type of work that I love, and use my skills to help people like you achieve your goals as well. that’s what I’m good at.
So why is this important? Well, when I don’t really want to turn the computer on, thinking about what I really want to achieve through this business helps me do what I need to. It gives me purpose, but it also helps me to focus what I spend my valuable time on – it is important that we build our business in a way that creates time and financial flexibility, not just in a way that makes me busier.
How does this help you? Do you know what you really want to achieve? What is truly important to you? Once you figure this out, then you can set goals and targets for your business that will help you achieve those things. You can design your business in a way that helps you achieve your goals and enable you to live the life that you want. I’m not saying it won’t be hard work, it’s gonna be incredibly hard, and a lot of work, and you will make a heap of mistakes along the way. But knowing why you are doing business will help you keep going when then going is tough, to learn from those mistakes to make you and your business stronger.
What I did was carve out some time to reflect on the things that were really important to me, there are lots of them but when I wrote them all down, the number one thing was being the best wife and mother I could be. That meant that I needed the time and financial flexibility to be able to be there for my family. That was why Amanda and I started Accession, our skill is to help people like you learn how run your businesses better, to succeed and know where you are at financially, and we have created simple tools that are cost effective (not like some of those financial tracking solutions out there!) and easy to use to do those things. But why we created the business is because of our families.
So, do you really know why you are in business, or why you want to start your business, and what you want it to deliver for your life?
Only once you figure this out, can you start to set the right goals for your business, so that it delivers what you need to be able to live your ideal life. It is so much easier to remain focussed on what you need to do when you are working on business goals that help you get what is really important to you.
